How to Clean Dog Poop from your Carpet

There’s a trick to everything…

First you must remove the bulk of the poop. Not a pleasant task to say the least. It would be nice if someone else could do it but it’s probably up to you so you will just have to grin and bear it.

Put on your rubber gloves and grab a dustpan, scrubbing brush and a paint scraper (or something similar)

Scrape up the bulk of the dog poop and put it in the dustpan. Then wipe any excess poop off with damp paper towels being careful not to spread it further.

Next, spray the stain with a pre-wash laundry stain remover. You must use one that has ‘Oxi-Action’ or similar reference. ‘Oxi’ is the key word.

Have a bucket of cold soapy water at the ready and using a cloth and the soapy water scrub the stain. (Liquid dishwashing detergent is quite suitable to use to make the water soapy)
Repeat spraying the laundry stain remover and scrubbing the stain. Rinse the cloth out regularly in the soapy water.

You may need to use a scrubbing brush as well as a cloth.

Do this until there is no stain visible.

Using paper towels, absorb as much of the moisture as possible.
Put the paper towel over the area and tread on the towel until it is saturated. Then repeat with fresh towels until there is little or no moisture.

Removing the dog poop odor

Make up half a cup of 50/50 white vinegar and water and pour it over the stain. You may need more than half a cup if the area is large.
Repeat the process previously described using paper towels to absorb excess moisture.

Sprinkle the area with a good handful of baking powder and work it into the carpet with your fingers. Allow to dry, usually overnight. Drying can be assisted with a fan or heater.

When the baking powder is dry vacuum it up.

Your carpet will smell sweet and fresh with no hint of dog poop odor.

It is advisable that you test your carpet for color fastness in an inconspicuous area first.
